when I sit near a man who is poor and broken outside (I am broken too, but hide it)
I recognize something profound: the gospel is what it is for all people.

Yet, when we claim salvation and the Good News of Jesus Christ taking up his cross for us, laying down his life, putting aside all worldly wealth…when I do this, as a privileged man, I feel convicted. I am confused as to how my Jesus is also his, even though it is so.

When I say the Lord’s Prayer next to a poor and broken man, I feel a hypocrite and recognize I don’t really follow in deep. I make my cross light because I can.

the back of my giant eagle shredded wheat box:

LOVE YOUR BABY, GET A WORKOUT!
No time to go to the gym? That happy baby of yours loves to be picked up and held, and it’s easier to kiss them when they’re in your arms. You’re getting stronger and the giggles are an extra bonus. Bigger kids like to be pushed swings and merry-go-rounds. Hint: Great arm exercise for you!

That might just work for me.

fasting

for me, fasting is about discipline and sacrifice in order to 1. humble yourself and recognize God’s provision 2. to be able to actually do what you want.

These issues of discipline (especially as of late) have been extremely important for me and extremely difficult. Living by oneself without people to challenge, encourage and work alongside you in the work of life makes it difficult (for me at least) to do what I want.

The usual:

waking up on time
reading and finishing books
writing projects, poems
reading the bible, giving God the time he deserves
exercising
not wasting time (surfing the web, etc)

ready, set, world!

so, decidedly i am going to fast from not doing what i want. a fast is discipline, is less is more, is sacrifice for true gain, a refocusing.

wed nes day

a lot going on for the better

yesterday i enjoyed a good day at work…followed by the first of (hopefully) many neighborhood dinners. There are so many nice people who live within a few blocks of each other here and we do not see eachother enough and often eat alone in our boring little houses. Well, I often have been eating alone at least. Which is real real lonely.

Last night that all changed and I had 10+ for dinner and good conversations.

Following that, I took my friend Dismas back to his apartment in Avalon and got to see his place and meet his roommate Jackson. Dismas is from Burundi, Jackson from Rwanda. They are so swell and wonderfully friendly. Hopefully Jackson will come for dinner next week.

They keep their apartment temperature at a constant 83fahrenheit.
